SUMMARY:WEBINAR: The Medicines and Medical Devices Bill - the UK regulatory environment following Brexit
DESCRIPTION:Join Mills & Reeve for this webinar where we will discuss the Medicines and Medical Devices Bill – the UK regulatory environment following Brexit. \nAs the end of the Brexit transition period approaches we see UK Government making plans to move forward as a standalone regulatory system. A central plank of these plans is the Medicines and Medical Devices Bill. This was published in February\, and is making its way through the Parliamentary process. Although existing EU law will be brought over into the UK system from 1 January 2021\, the Bill gives broad powers to the Health Minister to develop the law to fit UK priorities. Promoting fast-track approval of innovative medicines and technologies and reducing red tape\, as well as promoting UK-based industry\, will take on greater importance. \nFor medical devices\, the situation is made more complex by the forthcoming full implementation of the new EU regulations on medical devices and in vitro diagnostics. Likewise\, the EU clinical trials system is yet to be rolled out pending completion of the EMA’s new portal and database. International group companies using personal data\, or even non-international organisations which are using Cloud or other service providers in non-EEA countries (such as India or elsewhere)\, need to be aware of the implications arising from the ruling. \nFor life sciences businesses\, the kinds of data that may be affected could be data about individual patients and their treatment\, clinical trial data and information about staff\, research colleagues and physicians. Brown – Professor in Interactive Systems for Social Inclusion\, Nottingham Trent University\nDavid is Professor of Interactive systems for Social Inclusion\, with the Department of Computer Science at Nottingham Trent University. Recent grants on which he has acted as PI include 2 EU H2020 projects (MaTHiSiS and No One Left Behind) on affective computing and digital game making for students with learning disabilities and autism\, an EPSRC project (An Internet of Soft Things) on co-design of networked soft textile interfaces to promote mental wellbeing\, and a range of EU Erasmus projects (e.g.\, Pathway+) to use affective computing to provide personalised learning pathways for students with learning disabilities. He is Conference Co-Chair for the International Conference of Virtual Reality\, Disability and Associated Technologies\, and Associate Editor for Frontiers – Virtual Reality and Medicine. \n\nDr John Broulidakis- Research Scientist\, Emteq Labs\nJohn was educated at the university of Sussex where he gained a first-class honours degree in Psychology with Neuroscience. John completed his PhD at the University of Southampton in Cognitive Neuroscience in 2019. He has direct experience of the issues and challenges associated with managing large and complex clinical studies having successfully managed a €2.5million EU funded study. Currently he is working as a research scientist for medical device manufacture Emteq Labs. There he is involved in manufacturing ecologically valid\, “context aware” emotion recognition systems though novel wearable devices\n \n\nProf. Michael Hornberger- (Professor of Applied Dementia Research\, Norwich Medical School\, University of East Anglia) Associate Dean of Innovation\, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences\, University of East Anglia)\nMichael is the Professor of Applied Dementia Research at the Norwich Medical School and the Associate Dean of Innovation\, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. His research focuses on improving diagnosis\, disease progression tracking and symptom management in dementia. His research group employs various research methodologies (clinical\, cognition\, sensor technology\, neuroimaging and genetics) as well as disease interventions (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) for their research studies. His current research is particularly focused on spatial orientation and navigation deficits in dementia and how this has an impact on people’s outdoor activities such as driving and walking safely.

This event is classed as State Aid to participating businesses\, the value of which is £127\, but is delivered completely free of charge to participants \nSpeaker Profiles: \n \nSteve Simler MRPharm.s\, MedsOnTrack \nSteve has been working as a pharmacist in elite sport for over 20 years\, initially in a supply capacity\, and for the past 10 years in providing medicines management consultancy and software to teams in the Premier League and English Football League as well as national governing bodies for football\, rugby\, athletics\, tennis\, cricket\, rowing\, and cycling amongst others.\nHe was one of the lead pharmacists for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics\, then again for the London 2017 Athletics and Para-Athletics World Championships.\nAs well as giving talks about vitamin D\, he lectures on various topics pertaining to drugs in sport and the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatories in sport.\nIn 2006\, sport doctors approached Steve to advise on obtaining a reliable source of vitamin D that could pass tests for WADA-prohibited substances\, this prompted an association with Synergy Biologics\, makers of Pro D3\, and this relationship is ongoing\, and stimulated an interest in vitamin D on which he keeps abreast of research\, and reads extensively.\nSince 2016 Steve has been a pharmacist panel member for the General Pharmaceutical Council’s Fitness to Practise Committee\, and has recently started as an NHS Test and Trace clinical contact tracer on a part time basis. \n \nJanet Worrell\, Head of Regulatory\, JensonR+ \nJanet is an experienced regulatory affairs professional\, having supported a diverse portfolio of products\, for a number of companies across the East Midlands. She is currently on secondment to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust\, based in Clinical Engineering. With a degree in Biomaterials and PhD in Bioengineering\, she has a particular interest in the medical applications of Additive Manufacturing\, including assistive and rehabilitation devices (inc. prosthetics)\, implants and diagnostics. She has 20 years experience in multidisciplinary research into Additive Manufacturing\, including a 2-year JSPS fellowship held at NAIST\, Japan. Her expertise lies in material development for AM and advancing understanding of coupled material-processing aspects\, in particular for polymer and glass powder bed fusion. \n\nPaul Unwin\, Industrial Chair\, Additive Manufacturing Strategy Steering Group (AM UK) \nAM UK is an independent\, government-backed collaboration\, positioned to help drive the UK’s AM strategy. The national strategy published in September 2017 provides recommendations to enable UK industry to unlock the full commercial potential of additive manufacturing and presents the output of 5 years of work undertaken by the UK AM community.\nPreviously\, Paul was the founding CEO of the Stanmore Implants Worldwide Ltd\, who are a world renowned specialist orthopaedic implant service provider. Paul was the creator and architect of a ground-breaking patient-specific implant system that integrated patient imaging\, implant design\, implant manufacture utilising Additive Manufacturing and placing the implants with the aid of robotics\, culminating in the successful surgical placement – a world first. Paul and his team began investigating additive manufacturing for orthopaedic implants in 2006 and after following an extensive development programme built and implanted one of the first additive manufactured mega bone replacements in 2011. \n\nAshley Stratton-Powell\, Senior Medical Device Specialist\, MHRA\nAshley is Technical Lead for Orthopaedics at Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). He leads a team of Medical Device Specialists who are responsible for investigating trends in adverse incident reports\, issuing patient safety alerts and producing guidance on regulatory issues. He has a PhD in Medical Engineering from the University of Leeds and is a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Please click here to contact the team. \n  \nSPEAKER PROFILES: \n \nProfessor Morgan Alexander\, Professor of Biomedical Surfaces\, University of Nottingham \nMorgan Alexander is Professor of Biomedical Surfaces\, the Director of the EPSRC Programme Grant in Next Generation Biomaterials Discovery and a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator based in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham. He received his BSc in Materials (1988) and his PhD from the same department at The University of Sheffield in 1992. \nHis work involves developing materials for application in human healthcare and characterising relationships between surface structure and biological properties. Understanding these relationships is critical to the development of next generation biomaterials and it is the theme running through his group’s work across a variety of areas spanning control of bacterial adhesion\, to engineering cell response with applications in medical devices and cell manufacture. \n \nKiril Kalenderski\, PhD Student\, University of Nottingham \nKiril is a researcher at the University of Nottingham\, studying biofilm formation on bio-material surfaces developed as medical device coatings. He has predominantly worked with indwelling urinary catheters\, to determine the efficacy of bio-material coatings in reducing biofilm formation on these devices\, within in vitro experiments and clinical settings. \n  \n  \nDr Robert Cavanagh\, Research Fellow\, University of Nottingham \nRob completed his PhD in Drug delivery in 2017 at the University of Nottingham and focused on investigating intestinal permeability enhancers for the delivery of biologics. He joined Professor Cameron Alexander’s group in December 2017 as a post-doctoral researcher studying chemotherapeutic delivery using novel polymeric nanoparticles. \n  \n  \nDr Patrícia Monteiro\, Research Fellow\, University of Nottingham \nPatrícia received a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP)\, Brazil. In 2019 she completed her Ph.D. in drug delivery at the University of Nottingham. She then joined the EPSRC Programme Grant in Next Generation Biomaterials Discovery as a post-doctoral researcher. Her current research is focused on the development of bioresponsive polymers for triple negative breast cancer therapy. \n  \n  \n  \nDr Leanne Fisher\, Research Fellow\, University of Nottingham \nSchool of Life Sciences\, Immunology and Immuno-bioengineering Group \nLeanne’s research has focussed on the design and development of antimicrobial/anti-fouling surfaces to prevent the formation of biofilms on medical devices. More recently\, she has been studying the impact of surface engineering on immune modulation and prevention of the foreign body response. Alongside this\, Leanne works in developing immune-competent biomimetic tissue models\, specifically organ-on-a-chip models. \n  \n \nDr Matthew Vassey\, Research Fellow\, University of Nottingham \nMatthew received a B.Sc. in Microbiology and Cellular Biology in 2005 at the University of Nottingham. In 2014 he completed his Ph.D. in Cellular Microbiology also at the University of Nottingham. He joined the EPSRC Programme Grant in Next Generation Biomaterials Discovery as a post-doctoral researcher in November 2017. His current research is focused on cell biology\, human iPSC derived cells\, 3D biology\, host-pathogen interactions and infection biology. \n  \n  \n \nArsalan Latif\, PhD Student\, University of Nottingham \nArsalan is a final year doctoral student researching in developing stromal instructive niches to promote healing and suppress fibrosis\, at the University of Nottingham. Before which he did his master’s in biomedical engineering at Chalmers University of Technology\, Sweden. Besides science\, he enjoys building Lego models in his spare time. \n

His doctoral research interrogated sustainable transport pilots in Milton Keynes\, with a particular focus on the sensemaking activities that took place in organisations. He further developed this understanding of cities as experimental spaces within the transport work package of MK:Smart\, a £16 million smart city programme. Through his research\, Miguel has explored the role of innovative technologies in envisioned and developing future urban environments. His research has drawn insights from urban geography and innovation studies to interrogate how the experimental spaces in cities may facilitate the development of new knowledge about sustainable innovation\, and on how such knowledge coalesce and travel. \n\nTom Cooper\, CEO\, Pantri\nTom is the CEO and founder of Pantri – a new platform which aims to make the new breed of WiFi connected kitchen appliances shop for repeat purchases automatically.  He is considered a thought leader in the smart kitchen industry\, with regular appearances in industry publications where he shares his views on how over the next 10 years\, a lot of the weekly shop is going to become a lot easier and automated thanks to exciting new IoT and AI breakthroughs. \n\nGianluca Bardaro\, Research Associate\, Knowledge Media Institute – The Open University \nGianluca’s area of research is robotic software development. In particular\, he is interested in how to enhance the existing tools and approaches to streamline the development process and achieve more complex\, robust and functionality-rich robot applications. Currently\, he is involved in the GATEKEEPER European project\, as a task leader. As part of this project\, his aim is developing a robotic assistant which operates within a smart home environment and which is capable of addressing the healthcare needs of elderly people.

Methods include MR proton spectroscopy\, diffusion tensor imaging\, perfusion\, relaxometry\, high resolution carotid imaging and combined electrophysiological/fMRI. \nProfessor Luca Marciani\, Precision Imaging Beacon\, Industrial Strategy and Business Engagement Lead\, University of Nottingham \nLuca’s expertise is in imaging the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract using MRI. His research focuses on GI physiology/pathology using MRI combined with other techniques. Luca is interested in in-body imaging of foods\, beverages\, dosage forms and formulations\, intestinal fluid distribution and developing novel MRI tests for GI motility and transit. \n  \n

During her PhD she developed and patented an essential oil based antimicrobial vapour\, whilst her postdoctoral work included the assessment of natural antimicrobials efficacy against post-harvest pathogens.\nHer research interests include the use of natural products as antimicrobials in particular to combat hospital acquired infections and biofilms.  Her other area of research includes the assessment of healthcare laundry as a potential route of cross contamination in the clinical arena. \n \nDr Maitreyi Shivkumar\, Lecturer in Molecular Biology at Leicester School of Pharmacy\, De Montfort University\nMaitreyi is a virologist and lecturer in De Montfort University. Her research has focussed on host-pathogen interactions in the context of entry and transmission of viruses. She has recently established her lab at the Leicester School of Pharmacy\, where she is working on developing broad-spectrum antivirals as well as investigating infection control strategies against coronaviruses. \n\nDr Andrew Kemp\, Principal Scientific Officer\, Q Technologies\nAndrew holds a PhD in surface disinfection and decontamination. His specialist area of research is testing for bio burden\, long term disinfection and decontamination. Dr Kemp consults for BICSc\, governments\, private organisations and companies. He is regarded as a global expert in his specialist area of work\, undertaking research at the University of Lincoln and the University of Baltimore. He is a member of the steering group for the UK Infectious Diseases Research group. He recently completed writing the environmental cleaning and disinfection guide and standards for the UK NHS Improvement organisation. \n\nLinda Knight\, Training Specialist\, Pal International\nLinda has worked in medical consumables for over 25 years as a business development manger and specialist trainer primarily in the infection prevention sphere. Linda currently works for Pal International in the MediPal division. She has a keen interest in cooking having trained as a chef and loves to spend time with her grandchildren.

International group companies using personal data\, or even non-international organisations which are using Cloud or other service providers in non-EEA countries (such as India or elsewhere)\, need to be aware of the implications arising from the ruling. \nFor life sciences businesses\, the kinds of data that may be affected could be data about individual patients and their treatment\, clinical trial data and information about staff\, research colleagues and physicians.
