Penningtons Manches Cooper’s Birmingham and Oxford offices have been appointed as legal advisors to the Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA), a new R&D agency built to unlock scientific and technological breakthroughs to benefit everyone.

ARIA was formed in January 2023. Backed by an £800 million investment from the UK government, the agency was created to empower scientists and engineers to pursue long-term, bold R&D programmes. These programmes will be shaped and led by ARIA’s founding cohort of Programme Directors: a team of scientific leaders with deep technical expertise and a focused vision for how technology can enable a better future.

The appointment will see Penningtons Manches Cooper advise ARIA on a full service basis.

The team advising ARIA is led by IP/IT commercial partner Dr Lisa Page and corporate senior associate Lindsay Chadwick, working alongside head of life sciences and IP/IT commercial partner Chris Shelley and corporate partner James Went.

Dr Lisa Page, partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper and relationship partner with ARIA said “We are more than delighted to have been appointed to support and advise ARIA and its ambition for the UK to lead in transformational research. ARIA will be ‘pushing the limits of the possible’ and we relish the challenge to help make this happen. Over the last 30 years, we have built our team to service the UK’s research ecosystem and we are well placed to help ARIA with the legal requirements of fulfilling its bold mandate”.

Lindsay Chadwick, senior associate at Penningtons Manches Cooper said “Penningtons Manches Cooper has a strong, hardworking and close-knit life sciences and technology team passionate about getting behind organisations with the potential to drive real world change, increase the reach of the research community and advance human progress.  This is a truly exciting opportunity for everyone across the firm who will be involved with ARIA’s work.”
