Trial of new vaccine for COVID-19
From today, doctors from Cripps Health Centre on the University of Nottingham campus, are offering front-line healthcare staff the chance to take part in the first nationwide trial of a vaccine for COVID-19.
Supported by the research teams at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) and the expertise of the Nottingham Clinical Research Facility based at NUH, the team from Cripps Health Centre will carrying out assessments of volunteers from 26 May.

Nottingham is one of 13 locations taking part in the Oxford Vaccine Trial to find a new vaccine that will be effective against COVID-19. In Nottingham, volunteers from front-line healthcare roles are being offered the chance to take part.
To take part volunteers will need to:
- be aged 18-55 years old
- be in a good state of general health
- be able to visit the Cripps Health Centre in Nottingham for assessments (and living in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire or Rutland)
- not have had a positive diagnosis of COVID-19
- not be pregnant or currently breastfeeding
About the trial
The purpose of this trial is to test a new vaccine against COVID-19 in healthy volunteers.
This study will enable researchers to assess if healthy people can be protected from COVID-19 with this new vaccine. The vaccine is called ChAdOx1 nCoV-19. It will also give researchers valuable information on safety aspects of the vaccine and its ability to generate good immune responses against the virus.
Volunteers in the trial will be randomly allocated to receive the new ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine or an existing Men ACWY vaccine which is being used as a comparison. The Men ACWY vaccine is already used in the UK to protect teenagers against one of the most common causes of meningitis and sepsis.
Researchers will carry out blood tests and collect information about any symptoms that occur after the vaccination has been given.
Volunteers will be asked to attend six visits at Cripps Health Centre over a period of 12 months. Initial assessment visits will take place between 26 and 29/30 May 2020.
